This is Gordon's Story

Retiring Point

For over 20 years Gordon has been successfully leading the growth of ChangingPoint, an OD & Change Management Consultancy specialising in delivering behavioural and culture change at individual, team and organisational levels across the UK, Europe, North America and Africa.

Gordon and his ChangingPoint team apply a mix of group facilitation along with 1:1 executive coaching to challenge unhelpful engrained habits, stimulate new thinking, support embedding of new behaviours, resulting in performance transformation.

During the early weeks of the first Covid 19 pandemic lockdown, Gordon suddenly realised that he needed to start preparing more seriously for his own next major life change- retirement. What hit him when the Covid pause button was pressed on normal day to day life, was how little thought he’d given to the non-financial aspects of his approaching retirement…was retirement going to feel like the Covid lockdown?

Gordon therefore started searching for online non-financial retirement readiness programmes to help stimulate his own retirement thinking and planning. To his surprise he discovered there was very little out there focusing on the psychological and emotional aspects of retirement preparation and planning. This sparked his idea to create RetiringPoint’s online retirement readiness programme.

Retirement is a significant life event that can trigger a mix of emotions such as excitement, relief, sadness, or even anxiety and fear. Emotional resilience helps individuals navigate these feelings and adjust to the new lifestyle and identity associated with retirement. It allows retirees to effectively cope with common challenges like financial adjustments, loss of work-related social connections, changes in routine, and redefining one’s purpose and sense of self-worth.

Emotionally resilient retirees demonstrate the ability to stay optimistic, maintain a strong support network, and find fulfillment in new activities, hobbies, or social engagements. They may proactively seek out opportunities for personal growth, maintain healthy relationships, and incorporate self-care practices into their daily lives. By cultivating emotional resilience, retirees can better adapt to the changes and uncertainties of retirement, leading to a happier and more fulfilling post-work life.

Retirement provides a significant amount of free time and freedom from work-related responsibilities, allowing individuals to focus on themselves and their personal growth. It’s a time when retirees can reflect on their life experiences, reassess their priorities, and embark on a journey of self-exploration.

During this phase, retirees may engage in various activities and practices to better understand themselves. They may try new hobbies, pursue long-held interests, engage in creative endeavors, travel, or seek out learning opportunities. By trying different experiences and stepping out of their comfort zones, retirees can uncover hidden talents, develop new skills, and discover untapped passions.

Self-discovery in retirement is not only about exploring new things but also about reconnecting with one’s true desires and core values. It involves introspection, mindfulness, and self-reflection to gain a deeper sense of purpose and fulfillment. Retirees may engage in practices such as journaling, meditation, or therapy to facilitate this introspective process.

Through self-discovery, retirees can redefine their sense of purpose and find meaning in their post-work lives. They can build a lifestyle that aligns with their authentic selves, leading to increased happiness, contentment, and personal fulfillment during retirement.
